CUTC Technology Transfer Leadership Award

The CUTC Technology Transfer Leadership Award recognizes outstanding leadership in designing and delivering technology transfer programs. Awards are made to institutions, not individuals. Up to one award will be given annually in this category. Awardees will be invited to present their programs at the next Summer CUTC meeting.

Up to one award will be given annually in this category. Awardees will be invited to present their programs at the next Summer CUTC meeting.

Who can enter?

The CUTC Award for Technology Transfer Leadership is open to all CUTC member institutions in good standing. However, the nomination must be made by a CUTC member institution in good standing. No more than one nomination is allowed per CUTC member institution.

What must be submitted?

  1. All applications must be submitted online by the designated CUTC contact person at the submitting institution. Applications must include an explanation of why the nominated institution should receive the award, along with information related to the award selection criteria. The nominated institution can be the submitting institution itself or some other institution.
  2. Up to two supporting letters from non-CUTC institutions (such as a public agency or an industry partner or a high school) that were the benefactors of the technology transfer activities. Note that this award is not intended to recognize academic programs at the nominee institution itself (such as a graduate program at a University), but to recognize programs directly designed to benefit entities/individuals beyond the confines of the nominee institution. Each letter should be no more than one page long with single-line spacing and a Times Roman 12-point font size or larger. Please note the award selection criteria.
  3. Supporting materials about the program (no more than 3 pages). Please note the award criteria and include information that supports those elements.

When are entries due?
Online submissions must be completed by October 31st 2023

How is (are) the winner(s) selected?
The award recipient(s) will be chosen from eligible nominees. The following evaluation criteria will be used:

  1. Clear description of the program and its design. Evidence of a clear purpose of the program, how it was conceived and designed, the delivery mechanisms, the target audience, and how feedback was collected.
  2. Demonstrated excellence in technology transfer. The Technology Transfer Leadership Award is focused on successful implementation of research outcomes, tools, processes, and products, and adoption of new and existing technologies by stakeholders including DOTs, FHWA, industry, agencies and municipalities among others. Evidence that might be used to show excellence could include program evaluations by the stakeholders of the program, demonstrated application and effectiveness in the field engendered by technology transfer, and other tangible measures showing the impact on advancing implementation of new knowledge and technologies.
  3. Contributions to development of collaborative partnerships. Evidence of forging new collaborations between CUTC institutions and their stakeholders (for example, public agencies, associations, industry, etc.) that have the potential for sustained impact on the profession.
  4. Potential for scalability and transferability. Description of how the program may be replicated at other institutions and locales, by demonstrating ability to scale, ability to transfer, and ability to access program materials for use by other institutions.

Awards Notification: Winning entries will be notified on or before November 30th. All applicants will be notified of the results of the Selection Committee.

Awards Presentation: Winners will be recognized at the CUTC Annual Awards banquet held in January in Washington, D.C.

The Workforce Development Leadership Award is focused on, but not be limited to, enhancing workforce competencies and skills, engaging future leaders in transportation related challenges by working with K-12 as well as college undergraduate programs, and assisting in training the future generation of transportation professional that can help our profession. Evidence that might be used to show excellence could include program evaluations by the recipients of the program, demonstrated application and effectiveness of the workforce development program, and other tangible measures showing the impact on the transportation profession.
  3. Contributions to development of collaborative partnerships. Evidence of forging new collaborations between CUTC institutions and other institutions (for example, public agencies, high schools, industry, etc.) that have the potential for sustained impact on the profession.
  4. Potential for scalability and transferability. Description of how the program may be replicated at other institutions and locales, by demonstrating ability to scale, ability to transfer, and ability to access program materials for use by other institutions.

CUTC Award for Administrative Leadership

Established in 2012, the “CUTC Award for Administrative Leadership” is given annually to an individual in a staff position or non-tenure-track faculty position in support of the administration of a CUTC member institution transportation center (examples include the rank of director, assistant director, program manager, research faculty, research engineer or scientist, staff, or administration). The award recognizes outstanding administrative leadership contributions to the transportation field by non-academic appointments. The award recipient will receive a certificate of acknowledgment and a check for $750 that will be presented at the CUTC annual banquet in Washington, D.C.

The “CUTC/ARTBA Administrative Leadership Award” is given annually to an individual in a staff position or non-tenure-track faculty position in support of the administration of a CUTC member institution transportation center (examples include the rank of director, assistant director, program manager, research faculty, research engineer or scientist, staff or administration). The award recognizes outstanding administrative leadership contributions to the transportation field by non-academic appointments. The award recipient will receive a certificate of
acknowledgment and a check for $750.

Who Can Apply?
The CUTC/ARTBA Award for Administrative Leadership is open to all CUTC member schools that are in good standing. There is NO LIMIT to the number of nominations that may be submitted from an institution. To be eligible for this award an individual must:

  1. Hold a full-time, non-tenured or non-tenure track position within a transportation education or research program at a CUTC member university.
  2. Be nationally recognized for their leadership contributions to the field of transportation.

Please Note: Members of CUTC EC are not eligible for applying to this award.

What must be submitted?

  1. All applications must be submitted online.
  2. In 250 words or less, explain why this individual should receive the “CUTC/ARTBA Award for Administrative Leadership.” Please note the award selection criteria.
  3. Supporting Biographical Information: Although no length or format is specified, please note the award criteria and include information that addresses all elements.

How is the winner selected?
The award recipient will be chosen from eligible nominees based upon demonstration of superior
performance of leadership duties. The following evaluation criteria will be used:

  1. Demonstrated leadership in the development and delivery of programs. This includes innovative transportation education, workforce development, technology transfer and research activities, and supporting the field of transportation. Metrics used to show leadership could include the number of activities developed and implemented, number of participants engaged, and the national impact of these efforts.
  2. Demonstrated leadership in the development of best practices and administrative efficiency in the delivery of the program described in criterion 1. Metrics used to show leadership could include the adoption of new policy, procedures or measured improvements in organizational efficiency by other organizations or institutions.
  3. Demonstrated willingness to assist others in the betterment of transportation program delivery. Metrics used to demonstrate assistance could include case studies.
  4. Participation in professional organizations. Metrics could include membership in appropriate professional groups, leadership positions held and activity in associated committees.
  5. Public service. Evidence might include service to the university, community, schools, public interest groups or any significant activity not covered by items 1 through 4.

Awards Notification: Winning entries will be notified on or before November 30th. All applicants will be notified of the results of the Selection Committee.

Awards Presentation: Winners will be recognized at the CUTC Annual Awards banquet held in January in Washington, D.C.

CUTC New Faculty Award

The CUTC New Faculty Award is given annually to a tenure-track faculty member in transportation education. The award purpose is to recognize outstanding teaching and research contributions to the transportation field. The award recipient will receive an appropriate citation and a check for $2,000.

The CS New Faculty Award is given annually to a tenure-track faculty member in transportation education. The award purpose is to recognize outstanding teaching and research contributions to the transportation field. The award recipient will receive an appropriate citation and a check for $2,000.

Who Can Apply?
The Cambridge Systematics (CS) New Faculty Award is open to new faculty in all CUTC member schools that are in good standing. These are schools that have paid their CUTC annual membership dues for the current year. There is NO LIMIT to the number of nominations submitted from a member university.

Please Note: Members of CUTC EC are not eligible for applying to this award.

To be eligible for this award, an individual must:

  1. Be in a tenure track faculty position at a CUTC member university offering an academic transportation program.
  2. Be in a tenure track faculty position for less than six years at the time of nomination (individuals who may have served as a tenure-track faculty member in one institution and then moved to another institution still need to be within six years of initial appointment at the first institution)

What must be submitted?

  1. All applications must be submitted online by the designated CUTC contact person at the member University.
  2. A supporting letter from a tenured faculty member (can be from the same university as the nominee or from a different university; the nominator need not be from a CUTC member University). In 250 words or less, explain why this individual should receive the “CS New Faculty Award.” Please note the award selection criteria.
  3. Supporting letters from one current or former undergraduate student (preferably, but not necessarily from the same institution as the nominee) describing how the nominee’s teaching influenced the student’s thinking and career choice, and one former graduate student who is now in the workplace describing how the professor prepared him/her to be a contributor to the transportation field. Only two letters of support will be allowed. Each letter should be no more than two pages long with single-line spacing and a Times Roman 12-point font size orlarger.
  4. Supporting Biographical Information (no more than 10 pages): Please note the award criteria and include information that addresses all elements

How is the winner selected?

The award recipient will be chosen from eligible nominees based upon demonstration of superior performance of faculty duties. A subset of the CUTC Executive Committee members will serve as the selection panel. The following evaluation criteria will be used:

  1. Demonstrated excellence in classroom teaching as well as individual instruction. Metrics that might be used to show excellence could include student evaluations, student paper awards for supervised students and successful supervision of Master’s and/or doctoral students, and job placements of former students in the profession.
  2. Demonstrated contributions towards the development of new knowledge. Metrics might include refereed journal publications, as well as, refereed proceedings, research reports, presentations to professional organizations and awards for all of the above.
  3. Participation in professional organizations. Metrics could include membership in appropriate professional groups, leadership positions held and activity in associated committees.
  4. Demonstrated record of sponsored research activity. Metrics should include dollar amounts of research funding procured and spent and numbers of research studies undertaken.
  5. Demonstrated public service. Evidence might include service to the university, community, schools, public interest groups or any significant activity not covered by the bullets above.

Awards Notification: Winning entries will be notified on or before November 30th. All applicants will be notified of the results of the Selection Committee.
